Editing/Cinematography Ideas

Other after editing:
Green Screen idea
The imagery for 'dark paradise' is in fact a dark paradise therefore in the chorus i would like to use the green screen to show the boy and girl in a dream within this lyric. I researched some pictures I could add as a backdrop. Below the text I have shown these. Also for this part of the song it will break the constant black and white setting all the way through and the singer will regain colour to contrast with the dark paradise to show she will only be happy with the boy.

My Music Video

The song i would like to base my music video on is 'Dark Paradise- Lana Del Rey' released on her born to die album in 2013. There is currently no music video to this song.
Who is Lana Del Rey?
'Del Rey's music has been noted for its cinematic sound and its references to various aspects of pop culture, particularly that of the 1950s and 1960sAmericana. The singer has described herself as a "self-styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra." Before signing to a major record label, Del Rey provided sole production of her music videos. Musically, she draws influence from what she deems to be the masters of each genre, including Elvis PresleyAmy WinehouseJanis JoplinNirvanaEminemBruce Springsteen, and Britney Spears, as well as from poetry and film noir.'http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lana_Del_Rey

'She has been described as a "self-styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra" and "Lolita lost in thehood" and her music has been noted for its cinematic sound and its references to various aspects of pop culture, particularly that of 1950s and '60sAmericana. Rolling Stone noted that Del Rey enjoys playing the role of lounge singer. Del Rey has also been called a torch singer of the internet era and the anti-Gaga. Born Lizzy Grant, Del Rey has attributed her work to various stage names including Lana Rey Del Mar,Sparkle Jump Rope Queen, and May Jailer. Settling on Lana Del Rey, the singer claims she selected the name because it was beautiful. First mention of the name Lana Del Rey came from her Spanish-speaking Cuban friends. Following in the shadow of artists like Prince and David Bowie, Del Rey chose her musical identity because it: "reminded [her] of the glamour of the seaside. It sounded gorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue."
Del Rey has stylized her musical sound as "Hollywood sadcore." Time said the solid core of her sound was "movie music", with a fairy-dusting ofharp and an ominous timpani, laid out over-top a hip hop vocal cadence. Her vocal style has been likened to rap. Of Born to Die, indie music journal Drowned in Sound wrote, "She likes that whole hip hop thing though, has this whole swagger thing going that not many girls like her got," adding that it sounded like apoppier Bond soundtrack. In "National Anthem", "Off to the Races,"  and "Diet Mountain Dew", Del Rey employs this alternative rapping technique. Under the stage name Lizzy Grant, she called her music "Hawaiian glam metal", while the work of her May Jailer project was acoustic. Attributed to many genres, Del Rey's sound has been primarily linked to indie pop and baroque popsub-genres of alternative rock. Despite this, she has experimented with hip hop and trip hop genres.
Regarding wardrobe, Del Rey has appeared numerous times in PR photoshoots and music videos adorned in gauzy dresses and floral headdresses; she has been recognized as being less flashy than other mainstream female pop singers. Lyrically, "Born to Die" was recognized as sad. On the subject, Del Rey said: "I'm not sad, I’m happy. I feel like I’m happy because I’m at peace with the way that things are... I did have a darker filter on sometimes, but that slowly lifted through doing a lot of different things. And finding true love is something that really did inspire me, lyrically. Because I felt so much the same for so much of my life and then when you find someone exciting, you don’t know that you could actually feel differently than you did before. I was inspired. Del Rey writes her own lyrics, drawing on various experiences she had while living in New York City, and she has said that her lyrics, "sound like stories"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lana_Del_Rey

I wanted to do a Lana Del Rey song because a lot of her songs tell a story about love and breakups. They are also quite slow videos so it wouldn't require a lot of fast pace editing. Before i chose to do the one above I did some research on the ones i possibly would want to do. Here they are:

Born to die

Young and beautiful

Burning Desire

Textual Analysis of 3 Videos

The genre that Lana Del Rey follows is a hybrid genre of indie pop. Bands/Singer like the Lana Del Rey who also follow this genre are:
Jessica Ware
Florence and the Machine

Birdy
Lykke Li
Christina Perri

In order to gain more understanding of the genre and what type of conventions/cinematography/editing and connotations i will need to be portraying in my music video, i will be analysing 3 videos from the artists above.

Birdy- Help the people

The main editing point in this video is the constant black and white effect throughout the song. This creates a sense of nostalgia as it mixed with sadness and happiness. It also uses slow motion to emphasise the emotion of the song. The director has specifically chose to put this in especially at the begininng of the video to emphasise all the people in this world and how we all need to slow down to truly understand the value of life it shows she is taking a good look at them. He also blurs some background out in certain shots to focus the audiences full attention on the singer or things the want you to pick up on within the shot. It also used jump cut when moving from shot to shot.

The cinematography begins with a lot of establishing shots of busy london town juxtoposed with the slow motion editing. This has an occasional shot of the singer. Throughout the video most of the close up shots are of the singer whereas other shots representing other characters in the video are either mid shot or long shot. The reason the director has done this is because the close ups are so we can be closer to the singers thoughts and views and the shots of the other characters are further way as we are seeing it from Birdys point of view on a bus or in the street. The director is trying to make us think about the world around us.
The director chose london as the setting because this is the busiest place in england, this is also juxtoposing with the fact he made it in slow motion. He has chose to put the singer on a bus. The reason for this is that its public transport with strangers riding along with her so it links in with the lyrics of 'help the people' as she is singing about everyone living in the same world we live in. Again he has done shots of different settings to link in with the lyrics, representing different backgrounds and type of people. There is also a lot of characters within the songs of all different ages. Clearly by costumes we can tell which characters are upper class and lower class. The man on the left is clearly showing a stereoptypical lower class. His grufty beard and missing tooth suggests this. He is also wearing a gold chain and a brand armarni which is what gangsters are usually represented for wearing. These characters help us establish the meaning behind the video about different people within society. The artist herself is in casual vintage type clothes suggesting the genre of indie type, it shows her as one of the people and not any different.

Christina Perri- Jar of hearts

"Jar of Hearts" is a rock-oriented tune that is about shunning the continued advances of a former flame who was ungrateful while together, yet now wants to rekindle a failed romance."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jar_of_Hearts

Looking at the editing a lot of shots use the fade option to go onto the next shot. This could have been done to shows the singer fading out of her love it is also to show the audience that its the memories that she is reliving. When it is in the same scene she also uses simple jump shots, the reason for this is just so it can show us the singer from different angles making it more interesting.

The mise en scene throughout the video creates a mood of misery within the song. The black rose petals throughout the song could symbolise her death of love. This is because when people wear black it is usually to a funeral which represents them mourning. This could show the singer mourning over the end of her breakup. The smoke and fog of the background shows the singer is lost and stuck in this sence of loneliness now shes had a hurtful breakup. The song explains her heart been taking away by a man she once/still loves. The rain on the window a few shots after is pathetic fallacy. Rain shows the singer is clearly feeling sad and depressed. The rain could also represent her tears streaming down after the boy broke up with her. The colour of the video is very dark and gloomy again connoting herself stuck in misery due to this boy however at the end of the video it shows her defeating the boys love and he falls to the ground. In these shots the temperature and lighting/colour settings become warmer and everything become brighter. This is telling the audience the singer can be happy without the guy in the end. Also throughout the video the singer is filmed with a white backdrop. This shows she is now in the safe zone on her own, it also connotes hope. This could also be applied to the colour of Christina Perris dress. The outfit of the protagonist is also quite fairy tale like, this is also linked in with the story of the video where the boy is taking the souls of girls. The white on the dress could also connote innocent, immediately likening the audience to the protagonist. The antagonist (boy) is wearing black connoting evil immediately telling the audience he is the bad guy in this story.

The cinematography within the song uses mostly basic shots. Mainly close ups, mid-shots and long shots. This is because it is meant to be like a film as it has a story line too it therefore it needs to follow typical conventions of the basic shots. The close ups are to show the pain in her break up and how she feels about it all. It also uses close ups on significant parts of the story. In this case when the boy is taking their souls and the jar that they all have. The long shots are to show the setting and whats happening within the scene. In this case there is an example of a long shot where all the girls are together dancing. This is to emphasise the fact that the guy has broken all these girls hearts. Therefore i know that i use long shots to emphasise something within my narrative.

Britney Spears- Everytime

I chose to analyse britney spears because after researching Lana Del Rey her music is inspired by several singers and Britney Spears is one.

""Everytime" is considered a pop ballad with breathy vocals. Its lyrics are a plea for forgiveness for inadvertently hurting a former lover."Everytime" portrays Spears as a star hounded by paparazzi, who drowns in her bathtub when she starts bleeding from a wound in her head. In the hospital, doctors fail to resuscitate her while a child is born in the next room, implying she reincarnated." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everytime

At the beginning of this video the first editing it uses it the fade from the first shot to the second. Then from that it uses just a simple jump cut until right at the end when it uses a fade again. The fade is used to represent a transition of a major shift in time or emotional status for the singer. It also is used to suggest a character has been knocked out, killed or in a daydream. In this case she was dreaming what would happen if she was to die between her relationship. The simple jump cut is to stick to conventions of a film with a typical narrative. The shots also jump from one another in line with the beat of the song. In the post production process the producer has also added diagetic sounds of a helicopter to add to the narrative.

The mise en scene of the video is very busy because it has a narrative structure with a story to portray. There are 2 main characters in this video Britney Spears and her boyfriend. We can tell the difference between who the antagonist and protagonist is. The boy is in black suggesting he is the antagonist and we give negative representations to him whereas the artist is in white which connotes innocence and purity. This is a typical convention as the main singer is always likened by the audience. This theme of white is also continued through the rest of the video when the actress 'supposedly dies' she is placed in a white room in a white shirt again connoting positive outcomes. It could also symbolise she is now an angel. There is good use of lighting in this video too, when britney is surrounded by people at the beginning and paparazzi the lighting is gloomy and dark showing that the actress is miserable in this life but when she is in her dream the video lights up suggesting she feels happier without all this fame. The use of props in the video also help us suggest the storyline is about heartbreak. A good example in the video is when the boy throws a red vase at the wall and it shatters, this could represent their love being shattered as red connotes passion and love.

The cinematography shows lots of establishing shots at the beginning. This suggests to the audience were the singer is acting at the time of the video. In these shot is shows us skyscrapers and images of britney on billboards suggesting it is going to be about her famous life in the big story. When the actress is singing in the shot she uses a direct gaze with the audience capturing our attention. The shot of her in the bath from a high angle shows the singer as vulnerable especially in this part of the narrative when she has passed out and drowned under water. There is mainly mid shots throughout the video with lack of close ups, this links with the narrative of the artist feeling alone and distant from everybody.

Initial Ideas

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVeMiVU77wo In the video by alt-J- breezeblocks I like the effect where it retells the story by reversing the video. This would be a good idea for my idea as it would explain why she wanted to die in the first place. It is also quite an indie genre like lana del rey so it could be conventional

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyY5upiRO8Q Night light by Jessie Ware, is something i'd quite like to base a bit of my story and cinematography around. The black and white through it was i'd like to add on to my song to create nostaligia. Also the shot on the right is what i'd like to recreate for my chorus but instead of a white background i black, or dark fairy-tale one instead done by the green screen. The reason i like this idea is due to the cinematography and the message it creates to the audience. Its like a dream and then panning around the couple shows them trapped with each other in love. The fairytale would link with typical conventions of these type of music videos like my previous research on christina Perri. It also makes use of lighting throughout the music video as well. To link in with lyrics, i would also want to copy this idea too within my video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqBtS6BIP1E I like the use of the fade editing within this song. I would incorporate this into mine when it goes onto the chorus of her dreaming about being in the dark paradise with him. Fade definition 'The timing of the fades indicates the importance of the change in time and/or location between scenes — a slower fade with more time spent on black indicates a more significant end/beginning. A fairly quick fade to and from black could indicate a time lapse of a few minutes or hours, whereas a long drawn-out fade indicates a much bigger change.' However Due to my storyline being her memory i would choose to do this to represent how this can only be within in her dreams so it shows it by this beginning and end not being reality. Dream like.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdrL3QxjyVw most lana del rey songs use an old camera because her persona is meant to be a 60's girl.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjVQ36NhbMk blurred.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrTB-iiecqk I like the use of slow motion in this song. It adds effect at that moment in this particular scene. 'Slow motion can also be used for artistic effect, to create a romantic or suspenseful aura or to stress a moment in time.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slow-motion -Therefore this would be good in my video for when the singer finds out about her boyfriends death or when she is about to end her life. Also Images overlapping would be great for the begining of my song as the first location i want to portray is her near a river/water due to the begining of the song talking about lying in the ocean. Therefore i would love to start the singer with her refelction in water singing. I could create this effect by this technique. The use of shadows in this video also adds great effect. In my video i could use this to represent the singer is always in darkness accept for certain times when she may start to see some light in life getting better without the guy but then it goes back to dark as it goes over her face showing a contrast. I would do this in the same way radiohead did this.

Green Screen idea
The imagery for this part of the song is in mind 'dark paradise' therefore i googled dark paradise to see what would come up. Also for this part of the song it will break the constant black and white setting all the way through and the singer will regain colour to contrast with the dark paradise. Here are some images I would choose on for this background:

Music Video Production Tips

This article from http://www.aboutvideoediting.com/tutorials/music-video.shtml will help me create a professional looking music video.

Music video, traditionally called MTV - Music TV, is one of the most active, fast changing type of videos with most varieties. It’s a hot topic, not only for video makers but also for everybody nowadays.
When I was doing research work for this book, I found that “music videos” is one of the most often searched phrase at major search engines, leaving other art-related words/phrases far behind. Actually it’s one of the few words that compete with sex-related words/phrases.
I don’t think there are so many video makers on this planet. The only reason of this phenomenon is that “music video” is of common interest to most people. To be more accurate, it has high attraction among the people who surf often. People not only watch music video everyday, they want to know more about music video.
The majority of people will never make a music video in her life, but they are searching for information about it. There must be a reason.
MTV exists everywhere today. Originally it was a vehicle to help sell album. Now it has become part of life for some people, especially for young generation. Sometimes I believe that if you haven’t seen MTV for a period of time, then you don’t know what’s popular on the street and don’t know what young people are thinking. It’s one of the representative art forms in this new media age.
Besides the MTVs produced for professional singers, who need it definitely, it’s always an attractive idea to make a music video for average people, especially if they can see themselves in the videos. It’s a dream for some people. Lots of people will happily spend over thousand dollars to act as a real star in a real MTV. And they will send the video to relatives, friends, and colleagues.
There IS a market. As long as you can make it look professional just like the ones shown on TV.
MTV is quite different from other videos.
The most obvious characteristic of music video is that it’s highly stylized.
In a typical music video, there may or may not be a story, a leading character, you may not be able to recognize the screen time and place, you may not be able to tell what’s happening on the screen. But there’s one thing you will feel unavoidably: its style, its flavor.
I’m talking about good music videos, of course.
You may have ever seen some bad examples as well, which are basically recordings of a person walking around in a park aimlessly. No design, no idea, no style.
So, by all means, stylize it. Fast cut, slow motion, special prop, color, abstract background, animation, paradoxical story…Whatever. Figure out a way to make it unique. It doesn’t have to be a complicated technique. A simple approach, used constantly and creatively, will do the job.
Maybe it doesn’t make any sense to use the same technique for a drama, but it may work perfectly for MTV. The technique may not even be logical on surface.
Here comes the second major characteristic: what’s important for music video is not logic, or story, it’s the feeling and mood.
You can barely see a complete story in MTV, even if it’s the theme song of a movie. You do see some odd scraps of plot scattered in it, but they are rather unconnected patches. And that’s normal for music videos.
What makes the music video a whole piece of work is the underlying emotional relation. All the short plots may happen at different places, consist different characters, in different seasons, but they all contribute to one single feeling. Here I use the word “feeling”, not theme. More than often you don’t get a definite concept, or idea, or experience from an MTV. You will get a dim, subtle infection. Or you will feel the excitement and power if it is hard rock.
Here are some practical suggestion you may find useful.
Never try to visualize the words of a song sentence by sentence directly.
Although music video is kind of visualized way to present a song, but don’t translate the words into image directly. While it IS the easiest method to produce MTV, it’s the worst method as well. It’s ok to show sky when the words mention sky, but don’t do this all the way to the end.
Weaken the story, if you have one.
Avoid telling the story completely. Don’t try to do what you do in a drama - make sense of everything. You can omit large parts of the story line. It’s perfectly ok to confuse the audience to some degree in this case.
Split the story and scatter the plots throughout the video.
Your story may be as simple as just one scene, split it, use shots from this same scene at different places of the video. If you have several scenes, you don’t have to arrange them according to the real-life time. Instead, crosscut between these scenes and other non-plot shots.
Your aim is to make the viewers feel the atmosphere and emotion, not to describe the story. Actually, telling the story clearly will harm this aim by forcing viewers into a logical thinking.
Make the place and time in your music video relative blur.
You don’t have to follow the routine commonly seen in drama: establishing wide shotmedium shot, then close up. It’s ok that the place and time in MTV looks unreal. They are just less important.
Cutting back and forth between different places and time is acceptable for today’s audience. They seem have much higher tolerance when watching music videos and don’t expect traditional visual experience at all.
Use more close ups than wide shots.
I hope you still remember that close up has more visual impact. It’s naturally fit into typical music video style: visually impressive, sound intensive, image rich. It also helps to dilute the sense of place and time.
Normally you don’t touch the sound at all.
But you can always follow the pace and rhythm of the song. It’s not always necessary to cut to the music (cut to next shot at exactly the music beat) though. In some rare case, you can make the pace of visual and music conflict to each other. For example, while the music is very fast and dynamic, you use slow motion with cross fade. High tension will be created, if that is what you want.
Use jump cuts.
All kinds of jump cuts. Similar framed shots, say close ups of the character from different scenes. Different segments from the same shot and same take. Shots that break the screen direction. You have much more freedom here.
Use it constantly so that it can be seen as a style. If you just use jump cut once in a video, it will be regarded as it is - a jump cut, or in another word, a technical fault.
Using jump cuts is common state in terms of editing music videos. But it is more suitable for fast pace videos.
Avoid cheap animation.
Unless you have access to top notch animation, don’t even think of include animation in your music video. Those moving charts working fine in corporate video will not work here. They will make your MTV extremely amateurish.
As long as you have a brilliant idea and treat every detail carefully, your MTV will look as professional as any others’ work. Animation will reveal whether you have a deep pocket or just shoestring budget.
Make every shot moving.
In a typical music video, more than 95% of all shots are moving. You may have not noticed that yet. Turn on your TV and check it out. Tracking shot, crab, pan, tilt, zoom in or out, character movement, whatever, just make it moving in some manner, preferably by camera movement.
Never show a static singer, opening her mouth only, in a still shot. At least use pan or zoom. You can achieve this in editing even if the footage you have is still.
I’m not talking about action movies here. This suggestion applies to slow pace MTVs too. Proper movement will make the flow of your video much more smooth. In a music video, movement is more important than good framing.
Don’t forget to adjust color for every shot.
The chance of getting exact color you want without color correction is next to zero. You can use white balance and filter while shooting, but it’s in postproduction when you make it perfect.
The most simple and common way is to make every shot biasing to a single color. For instance, blue or green. And don’t be afraid of using colors with great contrast for background and main object. Using unnatural saturated color is acceptable too. It’s less necessary to concern much about whether it looks real or not. But make your color correction effort consistent.
Have a unique idea.
It would be better if you have a unique idea in mind before starting editing. It could be something very simple, such as techniques above mentioned, jump cuts, color scheme, disconnected plots, reversed screen time…As long as you have one, stick to it, stress it, push it to its extreme.
Due to the endless possibilities of music videos, it’s impossible to list all techniques here. I have one last thing to remind you in terms of editing music videos: feel free to try and use unconventional methods, nobody will blame you for not abiding the grammar of visual language.

Expectations for my music video

I spoke to 2 students that are part of my chosen audience(16-25) about my chosen song for my final music video. I explained to them what type of genre my video is and played the song to them. These are the answers to what they expect within the video.
